I purchased a Husqvarna 450 Rancher, works great. Went to get a backup chain & was told the Rancher takes an ,18 inch chain, looked at the PKG on 18″ and surely it id’d 450. This isn’t correct the 450 Rancher I bought takes a 20″ chain but the PKG 20″ ID’s 455. Bottom line is that the pkging is misleading at best.
Blackbeered says
Ed, it can take both. Putting the physical fit issue aside, you have to understand there’s a sweet spot between power [engine displacement] and the length of the bar/chain.
With a 20″ bar, you’re more apt to have more chain engaged in cutting than you would with a shorter chain.
I think a 20″ belongs on saws with 55cc and up.
With an 18″, there’s adequate power from a 50 cc [this saw].
Nothing worse than an under-powered chain when felling a tree.

I’ve had a 20″ on my 450 since day 1. Never had an instance where I wish I had more power. I regularly cut trees with diameters maxing my bar length. Beech, oak, elm, cherry, maple, basswood, ash, spruce, white pine. No problems at all.

I work at a store where I repair and sell husqvarna products. I would not own anything but a 450 rancher because of my back. The 450 has more than enough power with 20″ bar and the 325 chain. Hands down the weight difference between the 455 and the 450 makes a difference at the end of the day.

Hello Dwayne, Thanks for the great remarks above. I still don’t understand the difference between 450, 450E and 450Rancher. To make it more complicated for me, I have a 450Rancher II. So what is then the difference between these chainsaws. I am asking because of so much information on the internet on 450s, and I need to buy either a carburetor or carburetor diaphragms for my 450Rancher II. I can send you the serial number for it so hopefully will greatly help to counsel me on the right carburetor and/or parts to buy. So far I came across information indicating that perhaps the right carburetor for my 450Rancher II is: Carburetor #: C1M-E137B, 506450401. Is this correct, please? I truly appreciate your guidance and/or advice. Thank you!
